Great Nurses Expect the Unexpected

In an instant, the delivery changed from difficult to emergency.

Kimberly Guerriere of Bangor was eager to have her first baby. Her difficult pregnancy included insulin injections for gestational diabetes and concerns about her underweight baby. Then, Guerriere’s blood pressure spiked so high that her doctor was forced to induce labor early.

At Lehigh Valley Hospital, Laurie Griesel, R.N., monitored and comforted Guerriere through 12 long hours of labor. Then the experienced nurse noted a change: the baby’s heart rate was dangerously low. The slow heartbeat was caused by the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck—twice. The contractions were cutting off the baby’s oxygen.

Griesel set the team in action and within minutes, baby Julia was born by emergency Cesarean section. Thanks to Griesel’s fast action, Julia is fine. And Kimberly Guerriere says, “I truly believe Julia wouldn’t be here today without our nurses. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

A Magnet for great nurses is a Magnet for patients— and a Magnet for the next generation.
